Hardie board
siding, a cement board product used to cover the exterior of a building, is made by combining sand, water, cement, and cellulose fibers. Hardie board can be purchased with a factory-installed color covering baked onto the cement board, which comes with a 15-year warranty. If your Hardy board siding was installed with this factory coating and needs to be painted before fifteen years have elapsed, then you shouldn't lift a brush. Lift the phone instead and call the James Hardie Company. The rest of us, though, need to repaint.
Instructions
1. Choose a Hardie approved paint and primer if needed by going to the James Hardie website and viewing the approved paint list. Hardie is known for its low maintenance, which extends to the repainting experience as well. Hardie board does not swell or rot and so no cracking of paint should occur. Never use oil-based paints or stains on Hardie board as they cause the product to become brittle, and cracking can occur. Many paints can damage the surface of Hardie board, so caution should be exercised when selecting paints.
2. Clean the surface to be painted. Pressure washing Hardie board is not recommended, as it can cause the caulking at the base of the Hardie board to come lose. Pressure washing can also lift the siding up, allowing water to get behind the siding and permeate your moisture barrier. The best way to clean Hardie board is to use a soft sponge, soap, and water.
3. Apply painting tape around edges of trim, light fixtures, doors, windows, outlets, or any other object you will be painting around. You can also use special square brushes that make painting around trim much easier. If you have the dexterity of a surgeon, are especially skilled in painting, or are just an adventurous individual, then you can use a smaller paint brush to paint around trim edges.
4. If necessary, prime the Hardie siding. Primer is not required when repainting Hardie board for most paints. If you are painting your house a darker color, then it may be less expensive to apply a primer and then add your higher quality and more expensive exterior top-coat paint.
5. Paint the exterior of the building. It is recommended to apply two or more coats of paint to exterior siding.
