Select The Right Colour Of Shingles To Choose A Home

For many homes with sloped roofs, the roof is a visible and dominant feature. When it is time to replace the shingles, you want to choose the best color that goes with your house. Before making that decision, there are many characteristics of shingles that you must consider.

Instructions

1. First, you must choose which type of shingles you plan to use on your roof. The main types include asphalt, laminated, wood shake and slate shingles. They vary greatly in durability and price. Each type of shingle also has a completely different aesthetic and is available in different colors. Aside from cost and durability, you must consider the design of your home and which style makes the most sense.

2. Once you have narrowed the shingle type down based on your budget and the style of your home, obtain samples of different color options from different shingle manufacturers. Consider the material with which your home is made: wood siding, brick or stucco. Also consider the accent colors of shutters, doors and trim. Choose a color that will complement the exterior of your home.

Evaluate the "temperature" of the exterior colors of your home. If the colors are cool, such as gray, blue or green, consider installing a roof with similar cool tones. The most common "cool" choice is gray. If your home is painted in warm colors, such as beige, orange or red, consider installing shingles with a brown tone. Keep in mind that some grays can be cool or warm, depending on how much blue or brown light the particular shingle reflects.

3. Also, consider if you should use a light or dark shade of shingles. Observe the ratio of the roof to the rest of your home's exterior elevation. Many homes have roofs with high slopes that incorporate dormer windows, so the roof plays a huge role in a viewer's perception of your home. Darker shingles can make these high sloping roofs recede into the background and flatten the effect of odd angles.

If your roof isn't your home's dominant feature, consider that lighter-colored roofs reflect rather than absorb sunlight. If you live in a warmer climate, this can reduce cooling costs.
