Create A Small Room Appear Bigger With Fresh paint

When referring to a room as cozy or snug, it usually means the room is small. If you have a small room in your house that you want to appear larger, use paint. Color can brighten a room and give it depth, making it seem airier and larger than it actually is. If you're thinking, "Oh, I have to paint it white," think again. White tells your eye exactly where the room ends; the room may seem less cozy, but it doesn't look any larger.

Instructions

1. Get your inspiration for color from the furnishings of the room. Take a rich toned color from a fabric pattern, a piece of artwork or an accessory. This is your inspirational color and will go on the wall opposite the window.

2. Choose a color two shades lighter than your inspirational color. This color will be used on the remaining three walls.

3. Choose a color one shade lighter than the color you're using on the three walls. This will be used on the ceiling.

4. Paint the window trim and door frame the same as your inspirational color. Using this monochromatic scheme, with the darkest color as your accent wall, will make the room appear longer. But there are other color schemes you can use to give the illusion of more space in a room.

5. Choose a rich toned color from the color palette in your decorating scheme. For a room with an 8-foot ceiling, paint the bottom 3 feet of each wall this color. Paint the remaining portion of the walls in a color two or three shades lighter than the bottom color. Use this lighter color for the ceiling as well.

6. Create a divide between the two colors using a chair rail. Paint the chair rail a contrasting color to add visual interest. This will add height to the space. It will also give the illusion the walls are wider than they really are.

7. Open up the room by using a glaze or colorwashing technique. Glazing adds sheen to the walls thus "bouncing" light around the room. Colorwashing provides texture and depth to the overall color scheme of the wall, making for interesting play between light and shadow. When you add sheens or textures to wall color, the light becomes more interactive and opens up the space.
