Painting Versus Spray Painting Furniture

Redoing furniture, such as by painting, is one of the best ways to achieve a brand-new look without spending a lot of money. With so many painting options available, it is essential to have a general understanding of which paint to use on the various types of furniture. There's no right way to paint a particular piece of furniture, but people may find themselves frustrated because the end result is not what they wanted.

Know What You Want

Using traditional paint with a brush will leave paint strokes as an obvious defining factor, giving the finished piece of furniture a rugged and antique look and feel. If a piece of furniture is intended to have a clean, fresh and even look, then spray paint is the way to go. Spray paint, when used correctly, will leave a very even and polished end result. New furniture is often sprayed for this very reason.

You also want to decide on the finish beforehand. If you want a muted finish, you'll want to choose a flat finish, or if you're going for a highly shiny end product, you'll want a glossy finish. The finish can make or break your end result, so know what you want before you buy.

Choose Expensive

It is not recommended to use generic or budget paints when painting furniture. Many spray paints that are economical are not intended for use with furniture. There are many companies that make a high-end spray paint designed especially for furniture. These high-end spray paints are durable and will create an even and consistent flow of the paint.

Traditional paints are the same way. There are paints specially crafted for use on furniture. Using a cheap paint can result in the paint easily chipping or being scraped off. Traditional furniture paint has an additive in its chemical makeup that creates a shell-like protection when it dries.

Make Your Paint Selection Based on the Material

The material to be painted will also determine what kind of paint to use. If the piece of furniture to be painted is wood, traditional paint is recommended. If the furniture is metal or plastic, most spray paints would be the best option. Spray paint tends to cling to these materials much better than traditional paints.
