Painting a motorcycle can be a big decision, since most motorcycles are made with professional glossy paint jobs. But the factory paint is usually one solid color and may be too plain for your tastes. Choosing a paint scheme, design, graphics and colors you want to use can be difficult, considering the almost limitless options available today.
Exotic Paint
House of Kolor and Alsa Corp are paint companies that offer exotic and special paint for cars and motorcycles. The paint is expensive and not usually offered at most local automotive supply stores. Chrome paint is available that can make your entire motorcycle look like it has been dipped in chrome. The chrome can also be tinted different colors. Retro Glow is a line of paints made by Also Corp that glow in the dark for several hours after being exposed to sunlight. Prizm paints are made to look one solid color in the shade, but when light or sunlight shines on it, the paint explodes into a multitude of different colors. Other specialty colors are used to create an array of different designs and patterns in the paint such as snakeskin, brush strokes and even a marble effect.
Traditional Designs
Motorcycles have been painted with flames of all colors and themes since they first hit the road. Tribal flames, 3-D flames, ghost flames and other types of flames are all popular. Flat-black paint jobs are popular on older styled motorcycles. Flat paint jobs are painted solid with black paint and then painted with a clearcoat that includes a flattening agent mixed in. This leaves the motorcycle looking dull rather than having a shiny finish.
Other Designs
A professional air brush painter can paint almost any design or picture on top of a regular base coat of paint. The entire motorcycle can be painted or just a small area. Pin stripes have been a traditional way to paint a motorcycle, although they can be applied using modern designs. Pin stripes can be applied to an existing or new paint job. They are applied to the top of the paint or top of the clearcoat.
