Just How Much Does Trim Work Cost

Trim can be purchased in various price ranges.

The cost of trim varies widely depending on the materials that are used in its construction. Having finish trim installed in your home by a professional will greatly increase its cost, since in the construction industry labor is substantially more expensive than materials.

MDF

MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. MDF is a construction material that is manufactured in 4 by 8 foot sheets and in long profiled strips that are used for baseboards, door and window trim and crown moldings. MDF is substantially less expensive than real wood and holds up fairly well as long as it doesn't get wet. Depending on its size, thickness and complexity, MDF finish trim can cost anywhere from $.80 to $4 per linear foot.

Softwoods

Softwoods such as pine, spruce and cedar are widely used in the construction industry. Because they grow faster and are more intensively planted than hardwoods, softwoods are less expensive. Wood of any kind is more durable and more expensive than MDF. Many softwoods are milled into paint-grade wooden finish trim that may have variant color because it is intended to be covered with paint. Softwood finish trim prices can range from $2 to $8 per linear foot.

Hardwood

Hardwood trim is high quality and expensive and generally reserved for special rooms or upper-end houses. Because of its beautiful grain, hardwood trim is rarely painted. Maple, cherry, walnut, birch, beech and oak are all hardwoods that are widely used in interior house trim. Prices for hardwood finish trim can range from $5 to $15 per linear foot, depending on the species and the complexity of its design.

Labor

Finish carpenters may charge anywhere from $25 to $40 dollars an hour to install your finish trim. Finish trim is fussy work, and although professionals do it much faster than a hobbyist, the cost can still add up quickly. An experienced finish carpenter can do all the finish trim in an average-sized living room in a day or two, adding anywhere from $200 to $400 to the cost of having your trim installed.
