Fresh paint A Garage

Before

The garage is one of the most used, yet most neglected, entrances of the home. Many people enter and exit their house through the garage more than they do through the front door. Painting your garage is an easy, inexpensive way to improve your living situation.

Instructions

1. Empty the garage. The good news is that painting the garage gives you a perfect excuse to thoroughly clean out all the accumulated junk that’s been sitting in there. Throw it out, sell it or donate it. If you haven’t used an item for a few years, it’s time to say goodbye to it. Find a place to safely store the items you want to keep, because it will be several days before everything can go back.

2. Sweep or blow out the entire garage when the garage is empty. Use a broom or hand-held leaf blower to get all the dust, dirt, solids and spider webs off the floors, walls and ceiling. Then use the power washer to clean the walls and floors, and allow them to dry.

3. Prepare the garage for painting by patching up any holes, cracks or damage, and then paint the walls and ceiling. If the walls are made from cinder blocks, you will most likely have to apply several coats of paint, because cinder block walls just drink up paint.

4. Work on the floor next. If you really want to get picky, you can patch and fill any nicks or imperfections on the floor before finishing it. (The good news is that you can patch the floor while you’re waiting for the walls and ceiling to dry.) There are several options when it comes to the floor. There are paints designed for cement floors, and there are floor sealants that take more effort (as well as money) to use. Whichever route you take, make sure you allow the floor to fully dry before moving back in.

5. Move your stuff back in the garage. Now is a good time to buy a few heavy-duty shelves to store the necessary items that you have, or perhaps mount some cabinets on the wall. Keeping the garage tidy will help you appreciate your work every time you enter your house through the garage.
