Seal Cedar plank Wood

A penetrating oil-based wood stain and sealer will highlight the natural beauty of cedar, while also providing protection from water and UV rays.

Cedar wood is a beautiful and durable building material that can be used for fences and siding. Cedar wood should be sealed to protect the wood from moisture damage and to provide the wood with resistance to damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight. A quality, oil-based transparent wood stain will also highlight the natural luster and beauty of cedar wood. Wood stain and sealer can be applied to cleaned and brightened cedar with a brush, roller or sprayer. Care should be taken to ensure the sealer penetrates into the grain of the wood.

Instructions

Preparing the Cedar Wood for Sealing

1. Mix a solution of wood cleaner, following the manufacturer's instructions.

2. Wet the wood with a hose and apply the wood cleaning solution to the wet wood. Allow the cleaner to sit on the surface of the wood for 15 to 30 minutes.

3. Scrub the cedar vigorously with a nylon scrub brush. Then rinse the wood thoroughly with water.

4. Mix a solution of wood brightener, following the manufacturer's instructions. Apply the wood brightener to the wet wood and allow it to sit on the surface for 45 minutes.

5. Rinse the wood thoroughly with water. Allow the cedar to dry for at least 24 hours prior to sealing.

Applying Stain and Sealer to Cedar

6. Apply one coat of penetrating oil-based sealer to dry cedar wood. Use a paint brush, roller or sprayer to apply the product.

7. Start in one corner and work your way along in the direction of the wood grain. Maintain a wet edge as you go. If you are rolling or spraying the wood, have a helper work behind you with a paint brush to work the stain and sealer into the surface of the wood.

8. Allow the sealer to soak into the wood for 15 minutes; then go back over the surface with a dry brush and remove any excess material that has not completely penetrated the surface of the cedar wood.
