The How To Match Grout Color To Ceramic Tile

People like to take pride in the homes they live in. As time goes by, those homes will need repair resulting from day-to-day living and a general aging of the property. One of the more common repairs is needed when the grout in your tile flooring erodes. Should there be remodeling in process, matching colors between grout and floor becomes less complicated.

New

Many companies offer matching grout to accompany the tile that is being sold under their name. Your local home improvement center (Home Depot, Lowe's) will offer a variety of matched sets. The local Mom and Pop hardware store will usually have a different variety available. Whether the home is a new construction or in the process of being remodeled, matching the flooring and grout is a much simpler task with a fresh tiling.

Repairs

When repairing loose grouting in a floor that has been around for a period of time, remember that age has altered the color of the grout. What was once a rich tan is probably closer to a mild beige as wear and tear has taken effect. The purchase of a pre-colored grout may leave you with a noticeable color variation. In a discreet spot this variation may or may not be seen; however, a repair in the middle of the floor will most certainly stand out.

Powdered grout is the same color whether it is dry or mixed with water for setting. Using powdered grout will produce the closest match. Select grout powders in colors closely matching the desired color. Experiment with mixing two of the colored grout powders together to achieve a match. Once a correlation has been made, the powdert will be ready for mixing and application.

Alternatives

When unable to locate the colors needed through mainstream home improvement outlets, try a store that specializes in tile flooring. Often these locations will carry more color options. Should the tile outlet not carry the color desired, more colors are often available through special order.

Caution

Be aware that sometimes when your floor grouting needs repair, it may be a sign of more extensive damage. Sometimes grout is the first symptom of sub-flooring issues or foundation shifts. If grout is degrading or coming up in more than one place, requesting a professional opinion would be advisable.
