Painted wainscoting has cottage-style appeal.
Wainscoting is a decorative wooden wall feature consisting of grooved panels. From its humble beginnings in 16th-century Europe--when it was used on the lower half of walls to keep the damp air at bay--wainscot has transformed into a charming interior design element often used in cottage-style decor. You can paint your wainscot to fit with your room's color palette; but before buying paint, calculate how much you'll need to cover the wainscot, keeping in mind that it only covers roughly half of the wall. Use a free online calculator once you've taken basic measurements to aid in the task.
Instructions
1. Measure the length, width and height of the room in feet and inches, and record the numbers on a sheet of paper.
2. Measure the height of the baseboard, if the room has one, in inches, and record the number on a sheet of paper.
3. Count the number of doors, and measure each one's height and width in inches. Also, measure the width of any trim surrounding the door in inches. Record the numbers on a sheet of paper.
4. Count the number of windows, and measure each one's height and width in inches. Also, measure the width of any trim surrounding the window in inches. Record the numbers on a sheet of paper
5. Open a Web browser on your computer, and navigate to the Easy 2 DIY website. Input your recorded measurements into the dimensions boxes in the middle of the screen.
6. Click "Calculate" at the bottom of the dimensions table, and the website will tabulate how many gallons of paint you will need for the walls, ceiling and trim.
7. Divide the number of gallons needed for the walls, determined in Step 6, by half to obtain an estimate for the number of gallons necessary to cover the wainscoting.
