Propane tanks are often considered an eyesore and many homeowners consider adding a coat of paint to disguise the tank that sits in their yard. Painting a propane gas tank is permitted. However, some color regulations must be followed. Federal regulations require tanks to be painted specific color groups, so you need to know what colors are permitted and which colors to avoid to safely transform a propane tank.
Dark, Non-Reflective Colors
Propane tanks should never be painted dark, non reflective paint colors because the paint colors will absorb additional heat, causing the propane to expand to possibly dangerous pressures. Colors include anything darker than white, gray or pastel shades. According to the website Propane 101, high pressure in a propane tank causes the safety valve to open, causing the gas to release.
Light, Reflective Colors
Choose highly reflective colors to paint a propane tank. White, grey and silver are commonly used. Light colors such as pale yellow, green or even beige may be painted on your propane tank. Check local state regulations on what colors are permitted. Call your local gas company on approved colors and paints. Gas companies will often refuse to refill tanks that are painted non-regulation colors.
Stencils, Designs and Patterns
You can add a multitoned effect to the propane tank using more than one color. The propane tank will not be one solid color, so it may blend more naturally with the outside environment. You can paint camouflage designs or an outdoor nature scene on the propane tank for additional creativity.
Alternative Options
Consider using landscaping to disguise a propane tank. Plant shrubs or place a trellis in front of the tank. Purchase a propane tank cover--a variety of companies sell covers that are made of reflective material that will not absorb heat. The covers come in different patterns from stone to camouflage.
