Oil or water-based paint?
The main difference between alkyd and acrylic paints is that alkyd is an oil-based paint, while acrylic paint has a water base. Acrylic paint dries more quickly, has less odor, can be cleaned from brushes and your hands with water, and is generally less expensive than alkyd paint. Alkyd paint provides a tough, long-lasting finish that will stand up to scrubbing and is an excellent choice for painting floors, trim and even metal. Before you add another coat of paint, it is important to find out whether the existing paint is alkyd or acrylic because this will determine which type of paint will work best, and whether you need to prime before you paint.
Instructions
1. Scrub a small area of the painted surface with soap and water, rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry.
2. Dip a soft cloth in denatured alcohol or ammonia, and rub it back and forth on the cleaned surface.
3. If the paint comes off, it is acrylic. You can safely cover it with another coat of acrylic paint.
4. If the paint doesn't come off, it is alkyd, and will need a coat of oil-based primer before covering with either an alkyd or acrylic paint.
