Redecorate A Little House In Yellow And Blue

Painting a blue accent wall helps draw the eye into the room.

Small houses offer the charm of cottage living at an inexpensive price. However, they also have drawbacks --- their space constraints being chief among them. But this needn't be the case. Choosing the proper colors for a small house along with the right decorative accessories allows you to play up the strengths of the house while minimizing the weaknesses. This even includes vibrant colors like yellow and blue, opening up a variety of decorating possibilities to you.

Instructions

1. Paint an accent wall in the living room area. This will serve as a focal point to draw the eye into the space and the decorating scheme. To make this, paint one wall one of your colors like cobalt blue. Paint the surrounding walls the contrasting color --- perhaps a butter yellow. Hang pictures on the wall with frames of the opposite color.

2. Open up the space by hanging mirrors on your accent wall. Large mirrors reflect the light, which makes the space look bigger. They'll also reflect back the colors of the room, highlighting your yellow and blue combination. A mirrored screen also serves the same purpose, but on a larger scale. Make sure these items don't catch the direct sunlight.

3. Choose an anchor piece like a yellow throw rug. Place this in front of the accent wall. Flank it with a blue couch that faces the accent wall and surround it with chairs.

4. Tie the rest of the house in with the color scheme by introducing trim colors. For example, if you've painted your doors blue, paint the trim yellow. Paint the inside of a blue built-in bookcase yellow. Unite the upstairs and downstairs areas by painting the rails and stair tops (treads) blue and the bannister and stair fronts (risers) yellow.

5. Introduce visual interest by bringing in patterns. For example, buy throw pillows for your couch that feature patterns like paisley, stripes or checkers. Make sure these items include your common colors of blue and yellow. This principle works on any pattern you introduce into your small space, including on the furniture's upholstery. That said, be sure to feature mostly solid colors on these items, because patterns break up the space. This is counterproductive to your decorating efforts to make the house look a bit larger.

6. Accent the house with items like large flower displays filled with yellow blooms, colored pottery, a "blue willow" plate collection and lamps with colored shades. Choose these with your home's color scheme in mind.
