Use acrylics when painting directly onto slate.
Slate has traditionally been used as a roofing material or as flooring for outdoor and indoor walkways and stairs. Painting slate properly will ensure that the paint adheres to it effectively and that the piece remains vibrant for several years to come.
Instructions
1. Clean off the slate piece with soapy water and a kitchen sponge. This will prepare the slate to accept the paint more effectively.
2. Allow the slate to dry completely.
3. Cover the surface of the slate with a coat of acrylic paint. Acrylic will stick to the slate more effectively than water-based paint.
4. Allow the paint to dry before adding details to the slate plaque. Apply shapes and designs to the slate freehand or with the help of a stencil.
5. Allow the painted designs to dry completely. Apply a thin layer of synthetic slate sealant, which can be purchased at home improvement or hardware stores, with a paintbrush.
6. Apply a second coat of sealant, if desired.
