Recommendations For Selecting Fresh paint Colors

A splash of plum

Paint stores have seemingly endless racks of color samples to choose from, and many homeowners are intimidated by all that choice. Before heading to the paint department, get an idea of the colors you would like to use. Choose an "inspiration piece" that suggests colors to use in the room, or just pick a favorite shade you know can live live with. Once you're at the paint store, narrow your choice down to the perfect tint.

Create a Color Scheme

If you're starting from scratch, here is develop a color scheme for the room.

Choose three colors from one item in your house. Start with throw pillows, a favorite scarf, a painting or anything that has colors you like. Take the item to the paint store, and get three to five sample strips of those three colors.

From the three colors, choose the one that would look best on your walls. Use the other two as secondary colors for furnishings, fabric and accessories. Or consider painting adjacent walls in one of the other shades.

Tape the strips of your chosen color to the wall and evaluate throughout the day. Check the color in different lights and eliminate the colors that aren't working.

If you're having trouble, look at the darkest color at the bottom of the strip rather than the others. It's easier to see the variations in the deepest colors, if the lighter colors start to look the same. Then choose the right color depth on that strip.

Make It Personal

Let your personal tastes guide you towards the right color. Consider your lifestyle. If you lead a busy, hectic life, opt for simple soothing colors to calm the space. According to HGTV, cool colors--blues, greens and grays--promote relaxation and have been shown to lower body temperature and blood pressure.

Scan your wardrobe. What colors are you drawn to when it comes to clothes? Chances are, these colors enhance your appearance and are flattering. These shades are likely to be your comfort zone.

Samples

One you've narrowed the field, relax. You no longer have to select a color based on a two-inch paint chip. Most major paint companies now offer small samples for purchase. Buy a few of these in the colors on your list and apply them in large patches on every wall you plan to paint.

Consider the colors at different times during day. Decide which color you like in the morning or evening. Living with the colors for a few days will help you make the right decision and find a perfect paint color.
