Choose The Best Color For That Front Porch Floor

The front porch is a gateway to your home.

Your front porch helps create your friends' and family members' first impressions of your home. The way your front porch looks also has a tremendous impact on your home's "curb appeal," if you're trying to sell your house. Choosing the right color for the floor of your porch is a major step in creating the overall look of the house. Keep several important factors in mind when making a decision concerning the color of your front porch floor.

Instructions

1. Look at the exterior of your house. Notice the color of the wood, vinyl, stone or brick. The color of the porch's floor should "fit" with the color of the house. Cool colors like blue, purple, rose and gray tend to work well together. Warm colors like yellow, rust, orange and red blend well also. Earth tones such as beige, brown and green often complement each other as well.

2. Match the color of your porch's floor to the "vibe" that you want guests and family members to associate with your home. Colors help convey certain moods. For instance, if you see your home as a peaceful area of tranquility, you may want to paint the porch floor in a shade of blue or gray. However, if you think of your home as an exciting, vibrant hub of activity, you may want to opt for a color like yellow, orange or red.

3. Look around your neighborhood. Choose a color for your porch floor that won't dramatically clash with other houses nearby. Your porch doesn't have to match others' porches exactly (unless that's part of your neighborhood's restrictions), but you don't want it to stand out like a sore thumb either.

4. Look at your porch furniture and consider your decorating tastes. If you have furniture and accent pieces that are neutral in color, you may be able to get away with a bold color on the floor. However, if you like to add furniture and accents that pop with color, a neutral floor will provide a better background for brightly colored items.

5. Place paint chips on your exiting porch at various times of the day. Notice how the colors blend with your house and how they look with varying amounts of daylight.
