Handyman tools
A handyman is a person that is able to do just about anything around a house, community, or a job site. Jobs may include painting, carpentry work, light plumbing problems, counter top installation, construction and even minor repairs to electrical appliances. Becoming a handyman does not necessarily include a formal degree, however it does include experience and on the job training. A handyman is typically a person hired to complete a job in place of a large contractor.
Instructions
1. Visit or contact the local home improvement store to inquire about classes offered to the public. Classes offered may include garage door repair, plumbing, painting techniques, refinishing antique furniture, building a simple shelf or even the process of laying down tile flooring. You may find people of all ages and background enrolled in the home improvement classes.
2. Consider working for a construction, electrical or plumbing company that may offer paid training. Enroll in vocational courses at the local college or community center. Professionals skilled in specific areas typically teach the course. Cross train on various areas of interest. Specific classes may include hands on experience as well as those that focus on building materials, safety codes and regulations.
3. Read books and watch videos on home repairs. For instance, gain insight on building a small deck or screening a porch. Visit the library and check out necessary materials. If you have trouble locating a particular book or video, ask a librarian to assist you in finding the needed material. Make copies of sample drawings. Take the copies home and study them until you fully understand the concept.
4. Gather necessary handyman tools. These tools may vary from job to job. Typical tools include a hammer, nails, nail gun, caulk, measuring tape, wrench set and electrical drill. You need a ladder, step stool, drop cloths, safety goggles, painter's tape and a variety of paintbrushes. It is important that a handyman prepare for a variety of jobs.
5. Advertise your handyman services. Print flyer's at home or take to a local print shop. Distribute the flyer's to local businesses. Inform friends, family and neighbors of your skills and capabilities. Investigate local jobs in the area. Find out what the going price is on specific jobs relating to your expertise and experience. Be prepared to bid on jobs and set prices. Get familiar with word processing software that enables the creation of invoices.
