Remove Spray Paint From Walls
Spray paint conveniently provides even coverage for household projects and allows for a fair amount of control. Accidents can happen, however, and spray paint may need to be removed from household surfaces. Fortunately, removing spray paint from walls involves the same process as removing other types of oil- and latex-based paint. The proper solvent and the right technique will help return your walls to their original condition.
Instructions
1. Ventilate the workspace if the painted wall is indoors. Open a window or place an electric fan in the room to help with circulation.
2. Soak a cleaning brush in a small bucket filled with water. The paint can usually be scrubbed off if it has been applied recently or still appears to have a glossy finish. This should be your first method of removal before resorting to a chemical solvent.
3. Apply a small amount of acetone to a dry rag; it is the leading ingredient in common nail polish removers. Test it on an inconspicuous area of the wall to make sure the chemical doesn't damage the wall.
4. Proceed to wipe the wall with the acetone until the spray paint begins to thin. Rinse the excess paint with a damp sponge or cleaning cloth.
5. Use lacquer thinner as an absolute last resort for stripping the paint. This highly effective solvent is strong and should only be applied to walls without any sort of finish beneath the spray paint.
6. Apply the solvent in the same method used for acetone, but protect your hands with rubber gloves to prevent alkaline burns. Rinse the paint and chemicals from the wall and allow it to air dry.
