Decorating techniques can even be used on gingerbread man's best friend.
Gingerbread cookies, flat cookies traditionally seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, are a Christmas-season staple. They are cut and baked into as many shapes as the mind can conjure, but the most familiar is the gingerbread man. To make a gingerbread man complete, decoration is essential. With a batch of royal icing and a few decorating tips, painting gingerbread men is a cinch. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Mix royal icing into your desired palette of colors and spoon into plastic bottles or small plastic bags. If you're going to apply icing with the bag, squeeze the excess air out of the bag, seal it and snip a tiny tip of one bottom corner off.
2. Squeeze the bag or bottle gently, outlining the perimeter of the gingerbread man. Go back and fill in the space inside the perimeter (this is sometimes called "flooding.")
3. Use a toothpick to spread freshly applied icing into any gaps. A smooth, solid layer of colored icing is what makes your gingerbread man look painted. Leave the gingerbread man untouched for three hours, to give the icing time to harden.
4. Apply dots and lines for facial features and buttons down the front of the gingerbread man. Use a contrasting color of icing to do this. Let the icing set for eight to ten hours or overnight.
