Getting rid of Spray Fresh paint From Concrete

Removing Spray Paint From Concrete

Preliminary techniques

Before you run out and rent a sandblaster or purchase caustic stripping chemicals, determine whether the spray paint is temporary or permanent. Washable types of spray paint are inexpensive and some young street artists use them as temporary graffiti. If this is the case, a garden hose with a strong spray nozzle may remove most of the paint. A stiff plastic brush will scrub away the rest.

Chemical Strippers

Lumberyards and home improvement centers carry a wide assortment of chemical stripping products that you apply with a brush or pour on that will act as a solvent and break down the spray paint, making it easy to scrape away. Chemical strippers will work on relatively smooth concrete surfaces, but they tend to trap spray paint in deep holes and crevices. Use a natural-bristle brush to apply a chemical stripper because a plastic bristle brush may dissolve.

Soy-based gel paint removers

Staining or sealing concrete is a popular treatment in some regions because the use of chemical strippers may pit the surface. Afterward, when applying an acidic sealer or a chemical stain, the surface may develop blotches where you removed the spray paint. To avoid this problem, use a soy-based, gel stripper on the entire concrete surface. Apply the gel liberally, as directed on the container and scrape paint off gently. Soy-based gel paint removers penetrate the surface of the concrete and encourage the spray paint to peel gently away (see link in Resources).

Blast it off

If you have a textured concrete surface with deep holes, spray paint may hide from other removal techniques. Rent an industrial sandblaster from a construction rental store and use a fine-grit sand to blast even deeply embedded spray paint from crevices and cracks. Be aware that sandblasting creates a localized breathing hazard so wear a good respirator while operating the machine. In addition, wear long sleeves, long pants and protective goggles.

Household products

Sometimes, accidental overspray from a painting project leaves behind a little bit of paint on a sidewalk or driveway. Spray oven cleaner on a small paint spot and let it set for 15 minutes before scrubbing with a wire brush, or try a soft scrubbing cleanser and work it into the spray paint with a stiff plastic bristle brush before rinsing with the garden hose.
