Use beach elements when designing a Key West home.
Key West, a tiny island off the southern coast of Florida, has a breezy, beachy atmosphere and a slow pace of life. When you are decorating a Key West home, find ways to extend the same feeling into your home for a relaxed, natural design scheme.
Color Palette
Some of Key West's main attractions are its white sand, palm-fringed beaches. When you are decorating an island home, use the colors of the natural environment to create the impression that the rooms are an extension of the outdoor setting. For an elegant look, use shades of sand-colored paint and upholstery for your walls and furniture; use natural-fiber furniture coverings to add texture and depth without breaking the monochromatic style. Accent the room with the turquoise of the ocean, green of the palm trees, and blue of the skies. The combination of a soft base with bold accents results in a comfortable, sophisticated space.
Minimalist Window Treatments
If your home has a view of the ocean or the beach, make the most of it with minimal window treatments. In doing so, you can use the view as a piece of art in your room. Choose simple, sheer white curtains that will not limit the line of sight even when closed, or go with pale blinds in a natural wood finish. Leave the top portion of the window uncovered to let in the maximum amount of sunlight for a bright, open feeling.
Natural Beach Elements
Bring the comfortable island feeling of Key West into your house by using elements from the environment in your design and decor. Choose cabinets with a woven sea grass insert, or use palm-shaped drawer pulls. Look for curtains, bedding and upholstery in textured, natural fabrics. Decorate rooms with jars filled with beach sand, shells, or rocks. Find large stalks of beach grass or fake palm fronds and place them in tall glass vases on an entry table, or bring wooden beach furniture into the house for an unusual touch.
Nautical Decor
Sailing is a popular activity off the coast of Key West; use nautical elements to reflect this passion in your interior design. You might use accent pillows in white and blue stripes, for example, or purchase art made from recycled sails. An antique wheel of a sailing ship can make an eye-catching base for a coffee table or a dramatic wall hanging. Find artistic close-up shots of brightly colored sailboats and frame them for the walls. Remember that with sailing elements, a little goes a long way: one or two nautical elements in a room can set the feeling without creating a New England-style sailing theme.
