Update The Outside Of A Midcentury House

Parents flock to the suburbs for quiet, safe neighborhoods in which to raise their familes.

Housing in America exploded after World War II. People were finally able to afford homes and returning veterans wanted peaceful and quiet neighborhoods in which to raise their families. Suburbs began being built and Cape Cods, colonials, ranch homes and split-levels sprang up overnight. While these homes were a vast improvement over apartments, they did have small windows, cramped kitchens and odd floor plans that created some unusable space. When you purchased one of these homes, you bought it because you liked the look of the home and appreciated its historical significance. Updating the exterior to infuse the home with your style is a good idea, as long as you allow the house to retain its design continuity and that it will fit into the neighborhood when you are done.

Instructions

1. Add a free-standing exterior screen made from wood or aluminum to a typical ranch home to add a decorative element as well as privacy. Set it far enough away from your windows to not interfere with the light. Possibly add a small patio area between the screen and the house for a private outdoor area.

2. Exchange the small windows for larger ones. This will have an immediate effect of opening up the home to light and views. Preserve the historical significance of the home by using wood windows.

3. Replace the front door with a wooden one, either a high-grade wood that can be varnished or one that will be painted. Consider adding side windows for more light.

4. Use horizontal siding to add texture to the home's exterior. Apply a fresh coat of exterior paint in a neutral color palette.

5. Add skylights on upper floors. Be sure the skylights are on the back side of the roofline.
