Suggestions For Painting Rocks

Ideas for Painting Rocks

Painting rocks is lot more fun than it sounds. Hunting for rocks is half of the adventure. Look near rivers, lakes and beaches. Painted rocks make great gifts for friends. They can spruce up a garden, decorate a home and offer a burst of inspiration and encouragement. Choose rocks with smooth surfaces and use acrylic paint for the best results.

Critters

Picture some of your favorite furry friends curled up in a ball for a nap. Imagine their front and back legs tucked under them and their tails wrapped around the body. Dogs, cats, snakes and mice all make good models. Paint smaller rocks like little frogs, toads and insects. Ladybugs, bees and spiders all have a nice round body that will fit on a rock. Your creatures can be lifelike or as whimsical and cartoonish as you'd like.

Fruits, Plants and Flowers

Imagine a pile of painted strawberries in a basket. Choose rounded fruits like oranges, apples and watermelons. Small rocks transform into blueberries, raspberries or a bowl full of cherries. Think about your favorite flowers or plants. Paint rocks with a cluster of local wildflowers, or even the state flower. If painting as a gift, use your friends' favorites. Rocks with lifelike plant paintings look great in a garden. Think of lush plants like ferns and tropical varieties.

Inspire

Painted rocks can be as simple as a single-word message. Use positive words like hope, love, inspire or courage. Choose quotes meaningful to you, and practice with the paints and brushes on some odd rocks to get a feel for writing with the paint. Place your meditation rocks in a shallow bowl or basket. Draw one each morning as a gentle reminder for the day.

Souvenirs

Each time you visit a place, search for a nice rock. Paint a scene from this place--a beach, a desert, mountains or a city skyline. Write the name of your destination and a date on the back. Scatter these memento rocks through your house or garden to remind yourself of these times.

Under Water

Create an "aquarium" using fresh and saltwater rock varieties. Paint your favorite tropical fish and crabs. Paint seashells on smaller rocks. Create sunken boats and treasure chests, add freshwater species like goldfish or maybe a large koi fish for outdoor ponds and fountains. Water lilies have a nice round shape for rocks. Place rocks painted with small frogs and dragonflies along the side of the pond.
