Painting glossy stripes on this wall is an easy way to dress up the entire room.
In decorating, a simple but subtle change can change the entire character of a room. Dressing a room in stripes can take it back to the 18th century or make it contemporary, depending on the color and style of your decor. If you like the color of your walls, but want to provide visual interest, adding gloss stripes is a frugal option. This project is easily completed in one weekend.
Instructions
1. Wipe the walls clean, using a little dish-washing liquid in a bucket of warm water. Rinse and allow to dry completely.
2. Measure the width of the stripes, marking the wall lightly with a pencil. The width of the stripes can vary or be the same, depending on your taste. Mark the stripes around the entire room, adjusting the width in the corners as needed.
3. Apply painter's tape to the wall, masking the sides of the stripes. Use a level to make sure the stripes are vertical. Also, mask off the baseboards and the ceiling.
4. Apply a light coat of the flat-finish glaze along the edges of the painter's tape. Use a paintbrush, applying the glaze in short brushstrokes from the tape to the wall. Allow to dry. This light film of flat glaze seals the edges and prevents the gloss-finish glaze from seeping under the tape.
5. Roll the gloss-finish glaze onto the wall. Use a roller that is slightly larger than the stripe, starting at the top and rolling down. Apply the glaze in several light coats to prevent dripping. As you finish each stripe, roll a final time from the top to the bottom in one continuous motion. This assures that the reflection of the glossy stripe will be uniform throughout the room.
6. Remove the painter's tape when the glaze is barely dry to the touch. Touch up any uneven edges with a small paintbrush.
