Fresh paint An Area With One Wall Another Color Compared To Relaxation

Bright colors are great for accent walls

If you are looking for a great way to create a one of a kind room, you should started with paint. Professional designers use paint to create an ambiance and foundation for the space. When you paint one wall a different color than the rest, you are creating what is known as an "accent wall". Accent walls pull your focus to that area and give your eye a place to start, when looking around the room. Accent walls create depth, add personality to the room and act as a backdrop or canvas for your unique display.

Instructions

1. Choose a color that will compliment or even contrast with the rest of the paint you have on the other walls. You can liven up the space with a bright orange, yellow or red to create a vibrant surge or energy in the room. These colors look great paired with taupe, gray and shades of white. Consider a mellow ambiance for a bedroom and perhaps opt for a plum purple, sage green, sky blue or warm beige. As you shop for colors allow your first reaction to that color lead you to your final decision.

2. Choose a paint chip that resembles the base color you currently have on the walls. Take some home and match them up. Take the paint chip that matches your current wall color back to the paint store, and use it to play around, by holding the accent color you are considering directly next to it. Ask yourself this: Do the colors play nicely together, by resonating back and forth? Do the colors make you feel a certain way that makes you happy? Can you imagine your room with your eyes closed, what the end result will be? Take your time and think it through before the final cut. If you are immediately drawn to a color and you have that "this is it" feeling right away, do not waste any more time second guessing yourself, just go for it.

3. Choose a level of sheen for your paint color. To gloss or not to gloss; this is the question. You have many options once you pick your color, as to how much shine you want on your wall. Consider your personal style when choosing your gloss level. If you are designing a nursery, you will want to go with a matte or eggshell gloss because you do not want a high energy gloss creating a disturbance in a baby's room. A playroom will want to have a high gloss coat, in the paint, because it will be super easy to wipe off marks. The gloss creates movement, because the light will reflect off of it and dance all over your wall. As a rule of thumb, just consider how much light and energy you want to create in your space and choose your gloss level accordingly.

4. Cover your carpet and belongings with your drop cloth. Tape over the top of the base boards and the top of the ceiling where it meets the wall, so you do not accidentally get colored paint on the ceiling. Make sure the wall is clean and everything has been removed off of it.

5. Mix up your primer and pour it into your paint tray. Get your paint roller wet and roll it over the wall smoothly and evenly. Make a "W" shape, and then go back over the naked spots until the wall is covered. Use the angle brush to paint the bottom of the wall near the base boards and up top where the wall meets the ceiling. Let the primer dry.

6. Determine if your primer has adequately covered your old paint color.Go ahead and do another coat of primer if you need to. If not, mix up your accent wall color and pour it into the paint tray. Use the colored pint the same way as the primer; described in step five.

7. Be certain that your paint is completely dry before hanging things on you new wall, and moving furniture back into place.
