Dreaming up new paint schemes to use for redecorating can enhance the look of your living spaces. Thinking about the style you want your rooms to convey can help narrow down your paint choices and help lead to a room that you will love.
Cheerful
For the room at the heart of your home, a cheerful, warm color is a great pick. Sunny yellow is a classic choice for kitchens, because it brightens up a room and makes it seem like a happy place. Use red accents and wooden cabinets for a classic country-style kitchen, or dark blue accents and white cabinets for a more sophisticated palette. A paler shade of yellow, accented by pale or Wedgwood blue, makes for a cheerful, but calm, nursery.
Exciting
If you're looking to rev up your energy level and have some fun, try bright orange walls. This color can work in a living room, when paired with neutral upholstery and light or medium wood tones. Keep trim bright white for contrast and use pear green for accents. Orange, in small amounts, is also a good pick-me-up for bathrooms. An orange accent wall can add energy to your morning without making your eyes bug out, as long as your bathroom fixtures are white.
Peaceful
Some people prefer their bathroom to be a peaceful, soothing oasis. Combine natural tones, such as cream, ivory and medium taupe for a spa-like feel. Add touches of fern green in living plants, bath linens or artwork to complete your restful haven.
Romantic
A romantic color scheme works well for a bedroom or formal dining room. Although pink is generally considered the most romantic color, it can be off-putting to some men. Use a misty gray-lavender for your walls and a cool, silvery white for trim. If you must use pink, try a dusty, muted shade and use it sparingly.
Focused
For a home office, you need colors that will help you focus and get your work done. That's where blue comes in. According to interior design expert Ali Hanan, "strong blues ... stimulate clarity of thought, while lighter, softer blues . . . calm the mind and aid concentration." Use blue's energies to your advantage, by painting the wall you face most often while sitting at your desk a strong blue and tempering it with a lighter blue on the other walls for a tonal color scheme.
