The choice of paint colors plays a significant role in shaping the feel of a room. It sets the tone and determines how the decor in that particular room is perceived. No one right method exists for choosing the right paint color. Instead, a collection of considerations taken together ultimately affect what paint colors you select for your home. These factors include not only the decorating motif, but also your personal preferences.

1. Choose one or two main colors throughout the house for the sake of continuity. If you must have other colors, use these as accent colors. Select accent colors that go with the color in the room. For example, if you've chosen burgundy and blue as your main house colors, an accent color might be golden yellow. Use this color on trim or door jambs or introduce the color in the furniture and accents.
2. Base your paint color choices on the decorating style you've chosen. Many decorating styles have colors associated with them, which helps you narrow down your paint choices. For example, Tuscan-style decorating favors terracotta, brick red, golden yellows, blues and greens. Choose one or two of these colors as your main colors and use the rest as accents.
3. Select serene colors for bedrooms. These colors fall into the cool color family and typically include blues and greens. Serene colors in the bedroom will help you relax at the end of the day.
4. Use bold colors as an accent or for one wall only. Although bold colors can seem quite exciting, they tend to wear on a person after awhile. If you must have at least one or two large areas that you paint with a bold color, make it your focal walls. Focal walls draw the eye -- for example, a wall on which there is a fireplace or a large gallery of family photos.
5. Pick colors with the room's function or inhabitants in mind. The function of a den is very different than that of a bedroom. Since colors set the tone for a room, select paint colors that reinforce a room's function. Additionally, places like a bedroom should reflect the tastes of the person living in that space.
6. Follow your heart if all else fails. Although there are many decorating "rules" about what looks good in a home, the best determinant for successful paint color selection is you. If there is a color you're dying to have in a room, even if it's too bold or doesn't go with the rest of the house, go with it anyway. It may still be the right choice for you, and if it's not, you can always paint over it.
