Popular Exterior Trim Colors

Your home's color distinguishes it from your neighbors' homes.

When you paint your home you make a statement of your personality and sense of style. When you put your home up for sale, you want that style to appeal to the broadest number of buyers. Protect the value of your biggest investment by choosing a trim color that declares your sense of style and is popular at the same time.

White

Copy the color of America's best-known house, the White House. White paint has been popular since the colonial era and is still a favorite for traditional and colonial-style homes. When the house is not primarily white, then white is a widely used color for trim, shutters and windows. Black or green trim is also frequently used for windows or shutters on a white house, and a red or black door is popular. Color Wheel Pro calls white the color of perfection and states people associate white with purity, safety and cleanliness. In the movie "Father of the Bride," Steve Martin lives in a classic white house with dark green shutters.

Yellow

Express your cheerful sunny outlook with yellow. Benjamin Moore lists five favorite shades of yellow that are widely used. They range from a light hay color to peach, gold and tan tones. Color Wheel Pro associates yellow with joy, happiness, energy and intellect. Eddie Murphy used a yellow house in the movie "Daddy Day Care." Yellow houses frequently have white trim; browns and greens also coordinate nicely. Using blue gives the house a Scandinavian feel.

Grays

Sherwin Williams paints 60 percent of its colonial home models gray. Gray homes with black-and-white trim express a formal, conservative and elegant style. Color Wheel Pro associates this with strength, authority and power. Trim colors are emphasized on a gray house. Paint a porch floor gray for a classical look. Cedar weathers to a lovely gray patina if left unstained or unpainted.

Sandra Bullock's Victorian home in New Orleans is white and gray.

Blue

Federal, Williamsburg or colonial blue are often chosen for Georgian and colonial-style homes. Those with modern tastes may choose a strong oceanic blue for the main color with white and gray trim. Blue symbolizes wisdom, depth and stability. Lighter blues promote healing and tranquility. Darker blues represent power, integrity and knowledge. A survey in England found that people in blue houses were more successful than those living in homes of other colors.
