Fix cracks in stucco with caulk.
Stucco is a plaster and concrete wall material that can crack over time. Bare stucco is an off-white color, and you can easily paint it to customize the look of the building. You must repair any cracks in the stucco before painting the surface to ensure that the paint is long-lasting. Repairing smaller cracks just requires some caulking, but larger cracks require filling with a cement stucco mixture.
Instructions
Small Cracks Less Than 1/8 Inch
1. Brush the crack with a wire brush to remove any loose stucco from the edges, or any debris from inside the crack.
2. Fill the crack with siliconized acrylic caulk. Let it dry for three days. The caulk will sink into the crack, leaving a depression.
3. Fill the depression with a second application of the caulk. While the caulk is still wet, sprinkle a handful of sand that matches the stucco finish over the crack to hide it. Let the caulk dry for three days before painting.
Cracks Larger Than 1/8 Inch
4. Use a hand chisel to make the deepest point of the crack wider than the surface of the crack. Brush the crack and the stucco surrounding it with a wire brush to remove the dust and any loose stucco.
5. Fill a bucket with cement stucco powder and add water according to the package directions. Mix the water and stucco together to form the wet stucco paste.
6. Fill a spray bottle with water and spray the edges of the crack to keep them moist during the stucco application.
7. Scoop out some wet stucco with a hand trowel and push it into the crack. Repeat this until you fill the crack with wet stucco. Smooth the stucco with the hand trowel so it is level with the rest of the exterior wall.
8. Mist the filled area with the spray bottle to keep it from drying too quickly.
