Rock painting is a fun nature activity for kids.
Rock painting is an inexpensive way to encourage children's creativity and imagination through art. While rocks are common objects in the great outdoors, they can be transformed into almost anything with a fresh coat of paint. Acrylic or tempera paints work best for this activity.
Rock Animals
Rocks of different shapes and sizes can easily become a child's "pet rocks" when painted to look like animals. Have children collect small, smooth rocks and think about what the rock shapes look like. Round, flat rocks are shaped similar to turtles or beetles, while elongated rocks may look more like the body of a cat or dog. If individual rocks do not resemble animals on their own, multiple rocks can be glued together before painting to create a more recognizable body shape.
Tie-Dyed Rocks
Tie-dyed rocks are ideal for younger children because, like tie-dyed shirts, the many overlapping colors hide any painting flaws. Begin by painting rocks white. When the paint dries, children can wrap yarn around the rocks in criss-cross or spiderweb patterns. Use thinned paint to paint a second color onto the yarn-wrapped rock. When the second coat of paint dries, remove the yarn. The areas that were covered by yarn should be white, while the rest of the rock takes on the second color. Yarn wrapping and painting in different colors can be repeated until the desired effect is reached. Sponge painting is another option to create a textured effect.
Rock Village
A village made from rocks can provide hours of painting fun followed by years of play with an indestructible toy set. Collect smooth rocks in various sizes and shapes. Children can paint rocks to look like houses, vehicles, trees and people. When the paint is dry, set up the village for play. This simple play set is easily expanded with the addition of more painted rocks.
Nameplate
Large rocks can announce a child's name from outside the bedroom door or on a shelf in their rooms. Begin with a large, smooth rock painted in a solid color. The solid background will give the painted name something to stand out against. Kids can stencil or freehand paint the letters of their names on the rocks. Further personalize the rock nameplate with small, painted illustrations of flowers, sports equipment, music notes or any of the child's other interests.
