Whether you have an entire room to devote to crafting or just a small corner, with some planning and inspiration, you can design your ideal home craft space. Containing your crafting activities to a specific space can help focus on work and encourage you to keep materials organized and easy to locate. If you're not sure begin designing a craft space, follow these guidelines.
Instructions
1. Measure the area you intend to use for your craft space. The amount of room you can devote to crafting will affect how you incorporate storage solutions and work surfaces into your space. Use the measurements to sketch an outline of the workspace onto graph paper. Think of each graph paper block as 1 square foot of space.
2. Assess your needs. Depending on your craft, you may require a bigger work surface or storage space for larger equipment. At this point, you should also take inventory of your craft supplies. Knowing what supplies you need to keep organized will help you make informed decisions about store them.
3. Determine lay out your space. With your graph paper sketch and measuring tape in hand, search for the right furniture. If you're designing a small craft space, consider overhead shelving, or find a work surface with cupboards underneath. If you have an entire room to work with, you can choose free-standing shelving units and a large workspace. Measure the dimensions of every piece and use your sketch to figure out if it will fit into the craft space before purchasing. When you purchase containers for organizing your craft supplies, make sure they fit comfortably on or in your storage furniture.
4. Arrange your craft area. Once you have acquired furniture, plot your craft-space layout on graph paper. Use your original sketch and shade the areas where specific pieces of furniture will go. This exercise will give you a good idea of how everything will fit. Move your furniture into place, and if you're not happy with the arrangement, try different layouts.
5. Install lighting. Once you're satisfied with your craft-space layout, determine where you need to add more light. Purchase adjustable desk lamps and place them in dark areas. Focus on creating a well-lit work surface.
