Preserve Porch Fresh paint In Your Steps

Keep your porch steps looking beautiful for years with a protective barrier.

Painting porch steps allows a homeowner to match or contrast the stair color to the color of the house siding, shutters or decorative trim. Many paint manufacturers make paint specifically for porches with UV blockers and anti-yellowing additives. Some types of paint do not have protective additives, requiring homeowners to add a barrier to the porch steps to protect the paint against fading and discoloring. Adding a layer of protection over painted porch steps also defends the surface of the paint from wear.

Instructions

1. Sweep the porch steps with a broom to remove all surface dirt and debris.

2. Fill a bucket with water and a squirt of liquid dishwashing soap. Dunk a stiff bristle scrub brush into the bucket and scrub the steps to remove embedded dirt, mold or mildew. Allow the porch steps to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.

3. Pour an acrylic polyurethane-based clear coat made for painted wood surfaces or an epoxy-based masonry surface clear coat into a painter's tray.

4. Roll a paint roller through the appropriate clear coat surface protector. Use a 3/8-inch nap roller for wood surfaces or a 1/2-inch nap roller for masonry surfaces. You can also use a wide paintbrush to apply the painted surface sealant.

5. Roll or brush the surface protector back and forth over the stair treads and risers, covering all painted stair surfaces. Begin at the top of the stairs, first applying the clear surface protector to the riser, which is the vertical part of the stairs. Roll or brush the protector onto the tread, which is the part of the stairs that you step on when going or up down the stairs.

6. Continue to apply the clear coat protector first to the stair riser and then to the stair tread until clear coat covers the surface of the stairs.

7. Block off the stairs with caution tape or an obstacle to prevent anyone from stepping on the stairs for 12 to 24 hours, depending on the clear coat manufacturer's directions.
