Fresh paint Over Fake Stone

If your faux stone needs rejuvenation, it can be painted and made to look like new.

Painting over artificial stone is easiest if you use hand-held pump-action spray bottles filled with thinned water-based paints. In order to avoid constant color changes and frequent spray bottle cleaning, you should have 10 to 12 bottles on hand, each containing a different earthy color. Mixing 3 parts water to 1 part paint gives you a solution thin enough to spray without clogging the sprayer. Add more water if you find you are producing messy splatter rather than a fine mist on the fake stone surface.

Instructions

1. Place a tarp or drop cloth on the floor in case your paint drips, clogs or splatters.

2. Tape heavy plastic sheeting over areas you do not wish to paint. Painters tape holds well and is easy to removed when the job is finished.

3. Move or cover nearby furniture, and remove wall fixtures to avoid over-spray damage.

4. Dilute 1 part paint with 3 parts water in a pump-action spray bottle.

5. Fill 10 to 12 bottles with differing colors, diluting the paint as in Step 4 above. Test how well each bottle mists by spraying paint into a bucket of water before applying the color to your wall.

6. Apply a base color using a light and dark shade of one earth tone. For brown, apply one layer of dark brown followed by one of light brown. For gray, use one layer of charcoal followed by a layer of light gray. Allow your paint to dry before applying a subsequent misting.

7. Add highlighting colors in light, misted layers. Red, yellow and green work well. Use white as the second-to-last coat and the finest layer of black you can produce for the final misting.

8. Dab splotched areas with your sea sponge to avoid over coloring. Your finished surface could have more than 50 misted layers to achieve the look you want.
