Fresh paint A Stucco Fire place

Use the right materials when you paint stucco.

A stucco fireplace, with its highly textured surface, requires the right preparation, tools and technique when you paint it. If the fireplace is brand new, the stucco should be fully cured before painting, which usually means waiting four to six weeks after it has been built. For older fireplaces, repainting the stucco gives you an opportunity to completely clean your fireplace, inside and out. The result will be a made-over stucco fireplace that adds new life to your room.

Instructions

1. Brush off any loose paint and white buildup--called efflorescence--with a wire brush. If you can't remove the efflorescence with a wire brush, use a masonry cleaner to remove it as directed by the manufacturer. Sand the surface of the stucco.

2. Wash the stucco fireplace with a gallon of warm water mixed with one cup of oxygen bleach. Rub with a microfiber cloth to remove all dirt, deposits and chipped paint. Allow the stucco to dry several hours or overnight.

3. Mask the edges of the stucco fireplace with painter's tape, taking care to lay the tape flat.

4. Stir the primer. With a brush, paint along the edges of the fireplace in even strokes about 2- to 4-inches wide.

5. Pour primer into a rolling pan. Use a lamb's wool roller to apply the primer to the surface of the stucco, overlapping the brushed-on outline. Allow the primer to dry completely.

6. Repair any cracks in the stucco with caulk. For just a few small cracks, you can use caulk from a tube, or use a caulking gun. Squeeze the caulk onto the crack and flatten with a putty knife. Allow the caulk to dry completely.

7. Stir the masonry paint, and apply it as you did the primer: first with a brush along the edges, and then with a lamb's wool roller. Allow the first coat to dry, and then paint a second coat, making sure you cover every nook in the surface.

8. Carefully remove the painter's tape.
