Board-and-batten siding uses alternating wide and narrow boards of wood, with the narrow boards covering the seams left by the wide boards, usually set vertically. Often used in completing a rustic or traditional look for a home, board and batten is available in several materials including wood, metal and vinyl. This variety of base materials also gives this type of siding a wide range of color options both traditional and unconventional. Some of these colors are a result of exterior paint or stain while others are mixed into the building material during the manufacturing process.
White
Whether bright and pure or tinted with light yellows, tans or greens, white is the choice color for many homeowners with board batten siding. Shades of white are available in vinyl, metal and paint and come in proprietary shade names such as the bright Superwhite from Sherwin Williams, the slightly green Linen by Mastic Home Exteriors and the slightly tan Cotton Fluff from Behr.
Brown
Capable of increasing the ambient temperature of the home by absorbing sunlight when too dark, the most popular shades of brown are light or muted neutral colors. Shades suited to board-and-batten include KP Building Products' Suede, the slightly lighter Canyon Ridge from TruColor and the chocolaty Fervent Brass from Sherwin Williams.
Tan
Lighter than brown, tan hides dirt better than white and does not require cleaning as frequently. Shades of tan include Totally Tan from Sherwin Williams, Almond Toast from Behr and Desert from TruColor.
Yellow
Less common than whites and tans, shades of yellow are available in light, almost white tones as well as dark colors reminiscent of a sunset. Lighter shades include Behr's Bee Pollen and Chilled Lemonade while darker ones feature proprietary names such as Confident Yellow and Glitzy Gold from Sherwin Williams.
Orange
Even less common among exterior home colors, orange siding often sits in stark contrast with surrounding homes. While not all manufacturers of board and batten siding offer shades of orange, wood and metal siding benefit from exterior paint companies such as Behr, which feature shades such as the vibrant Atomic Tangerine or the slightly muted Hawaiian Passion.
Gray
Cool and neutral, only the darkest shades of gray affect the ambient temperature of the home, raising it slightly. This color suits both light and dark trim color schemes and is often combined with subtle hints of green or blue. Shades of board and batten include Tundra Moss from TruColor and Granite Gray from CertainTeed.
Blue
Like gray, blue is a cool neutral except at its very darkest and like gray, blue works with both light and dark trim colors. While many homeowners choose a subtle tone of blue such as Wedgewood from Sherwin Williams or the cool Everest from Mastic Home Exteriors, Behr offers the dark and rich Deep Blue Sea while Sherwin Williams provides the lighter and brighter Hyper Blue.
Green
An organic color, several shades of green complement hedges and surrounding plants while other shades stand out in a crowd. Forest, from TruColor, and Apple Orchard from Behr are more reserved and muted colors while Electric Lime and Outrageous Green from Sherwin Williams are more saturated.
Red
A traditional color for often board and battened structures such as barns and sheds, red ranges from shades reminiscent of brick to shades resembling clay. Lighter clay shades include Smoke from KP Building Products while darker reds include Redwood from TruColor.
