Attract Bats To Some Michigan Softball bat House

Bats that live in crevices, under bridges or within buildings are most likely to be attracted to your bat house.

Proper setup of your Michigan bat house can increase your chances of attracting bats to roost in it. It is crucial to make sure that your bat house is large enough, the right color on the outside, that it is placed high enough off the ground, and is near a bat food source.

Instructions

1. Measuring tapes generally measure upwards of 16 feet.

Before you mount your bat house, choose a location that is in direct sunlight for at least 6 to 8 hours a day. Internal temperature is crucial for bats and their young. Ideally, bat houses should face south or southeast to greet the rising sun.

2. Let the paint dry fully before mounting your bat house.

Spray paint your bat house with non-toxic latex paint on the outside only. Wear gloves to avoid getting the spray paint on your hands. Place old newspaper underneath your bat house to avoid overspray on surrounding surfaces. The bat house painted black will attract sunlight and aid in warming the internal temperature for your bats and their potential young.

3. Trees could pose as potential hazards to your bats in their bat house.

Measure the height of your location using your measuring tape. Make sure your bat house will be at least 15 feet from the ground. Secure your bat house to either a pole or structure such as the side of your house or barn. Avoid trees, as this could lead to potential hazard from cats or raccoons eating your bats while they roost.

4. Garden lights attract night flying insects.

Place garden lights underneath your bat house as this will attract insects of which bats will feed off of at night.

5. Moving a bat house from its original unsuccessful location may increase your chances of bats roosting.

If you do not have any bats residing in your bat house after 6 months, move your bat house to a different location.
