Select A Vinyl Siding Color

Vinyl siding is a form of plastic used to cover the exterior of some homes instead of paint. Vinyl siding is available in a variety of colors and styles and easily can improve a home's appearance. One advantage of opting for vinyl siding rather than paint is that vinyl is much easier to clean. A homeowner usually can spray a home's exterior down with a hose to clean dirt and grime from vinyl siding (See References 1). Just like choosing exterior paint colors, however, you should choose the color of your vinyl siding carefully. If you change your mind after the siding is installed, new siding will have to be installed.

Instructions

1. Consider the colors of your home's trim. If you do not intend to repaint your trim when you have the vinyl siding installed, you should make sure beforehand that the color you have chosen does not clash with your home's existing colors. This also includes the roof and any porches you might have.

2. Check out the houses in your neighborhood to get an idea of the colors other people are using for their vinyl siding. Choosing a comparable color will help your home compatible with other nearby homes (See References 2). Having a home color that deviates too much from the norm in your area might reduce the property value of your home.

3. Visit a local vinyl siding retailer and browse through the colors available to you. Retailers normally will keep books full of examples that you can look through to get an idea of what the finished product will look like on your home.

4. Check the color of siding in the daylight before purchasing it. Lighting has a substantial effect on color. Test any colors of vinyl siding you are considering for your home by looking at them in daylight at different times of the day. This will show you exactly what your siding will look like on your home and not just in the store.

5. Take your home's resale value into consideration when choosing colors. Vinyl siding can be purchased in almost any color you can imagine. Before you choose something bright or unique, however, consider whether you plan to sell your home. Unfortunately, when it comes to selling a home, being different is a bad thing and can cause your home to languish on the market.
