Fresh paint Brick Foundation Walls

Painting a brick foundation wall can help improve its appearance.

A building foundation usually is constructed out of brick or concrete to provide the maximum amount of durability and strength. While foundation walls are built for function and not style, there's no reason you can't decorate interior foundation walls as you would any other wall in the house. Painting is one of the simplest ways to transform a wall for the purposes of decoration. Painting an interior brick foundation wall can be done quickly with the right materials.

Instructions

1. Run a shop vacuum over the wall to remove any dust and loose dirt that has accumulated.

2. Wash the wall using the scrub brush and trisodium phosphate, or TSP. TSP is a very strong cleaner that can be corrosive; use rubber gloves when working with it. Follow all directions and water-mixing instructions. Rinse the wall thoroughly when finished to prevent discoloration. Let the wall dry for at least 12 hours.

3. Fill any visible holes or cracks with spackling compound. Large cracks may require caulking.

4. Apply universal primer to the brick with a roller or paint sprayer. The sprayer will be faster for larger surfaces. Use plastic drop cloths and masking tape to protect nearby surfaces from undesired paint contact.

5. Clean out the sprayer or roller thoroughly with warm water to prevent mixing primer and paint together, which will negatively affect the paint job.

6. Paint the wall with acrylic paint that is compatible with brick. Work in sections, painting with up-and-down strokes for best results. Apply at least two coats for better-looking results, adding the second coat after the first has completely dried.
