Prepare Old Wood Siding For Painting

Wood siding can be painted fairly easily.

Old wood siding can look quite drab at times, especially if it has not been properly maintained over the years. If your old wood siding could use a facelift, you might be able to improve its appearance significantly by applying high-quality paint. However, before you start painting, you will need to prepare the old wood siding. Painting your house can be a huge undertaking, and proper preparation ensures that you get the smoothest and most long-lasting finish possible.

Instructions

1. Use your hose and a spray nozzle to clean the old wood siding. Scrub with a stiff brush.

2. Scrape away large pieces of old paint from the siding with a paint scraper.

3. Sand off remaining old paint with a power sander. Use horizontal motions for the best results.

4. Scrub the old wood siding using steel wool to remove any chalky residue from the paint you sanded away. This will allow the paint to stick to the surface better, which will lead to less chipped paint in the future.

5. Rinse the old wood siding again with your hose and spray nozzle, and let it dry.

6. Apply spackling compound with a putty knife to any areas of the old wood that have chips or dents. Since the siding is old, you will likely have some repair work. Let the spackling dry.

7. Sand away rough edges of the spackling compound with 100-grit sandpaper.
