Fresh paint A Steel Gate

Use a natural-bristled paintbrush.

Before you try to finish a steel gate, understand a pair of fundamental points. Steel gates, which are not suited for adhesion, need special types of primer to promote a lasting finish. If you apply an ordinary latex primer to steel, heavy peeling will inevitably ensue. In addition, because steel is subject to oxidation, it requires a primer with rust-inhibiting properties. Choose the correct finish and base and apply each using the proper techniques, or you may make the process far more difficult than it needs to be.

Instructions

1. Wash the steel gate, using a pressure washer. Allow the steel to dry for two hours.

2. Protect the area beneath the steel gate by covering it with dropcloths.

3. Use a mini-roller to coat the steel gate with etching primer. Use a brush to smooth runs. Allow the steel to dry for two hours.

4. Clean each tool with mineral spirits. Affix a new cover to your mini-roller frame.

5. Use the mini-roller to coat the steel gate with enamel. Use the brush to smooth runs. Allow the steel to dry for two hours. Add one more coat if the rust-inhibitive metal-etching primer bleeds through.
