Vinyl trim is a popular choice for exterior home siding and trim because of its durability and low maintenance requirements. While vinyl trim comes in a variety of colors, a homeowner may sometimes find it necessary to paint the vinyl trim (there may be fading on a particularly sunlit area of the home, or the homeowner may desire a total color change on the exterior of the home). Painting vinyl trim on exterior windows is a simple process that requires a bit of preparation to ensure the paint goes on smoothly and lasts.
Instructions
1. Pour one cup of dishwashing liquid into a gallon bucket and fill the remainder of the bucket with cool water.
2. Scrub the vinyl trim with the dishwashing liquid using a medium-bristled brush. Make sure all dirt and grime is removed. Rinse the trim thoroughly with cool water.
3. Pour 1/2 cup oxygen bleach into a quart-size spray bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with cool water. Spray mildewed areas of the vinyl trim with the bleach and scrub with a medium-bristled brush until you've removed all the mildew. Rinse the area thoroughly with cool water. Allow the vinyl to dry completely. If your vinyl trim does not have mildew, skip this step.
4. Paint the vinyl trim with an exterior latex paint that contains urethane. Use a straight edge to protect the home's siding when painting the sides of the vinyl trim. Allow the paint to dry completely before applying a second coat. You will probably need at least two coats of paint to achieve the color desired.
