Accurate cost estimation is an essential element of the generation of revenue by custom home building companies. Cost estimation is the development of the cost data that custom home builders then use to determine the profitability of proposed residential developments. Included in the collection of cost data are all the factors that can determine the price of a new home: labor, materials, machinery and land. People with a construction background who have skills in math, blueprint reading and data analysis have the potential to become a custom home cost estimator.

1. Obtain the right education. Although a degree is not always necessary, candidates for construction estimating jobs can draw the attention of employers when they have a degree and work experience. Degree programs that typically include courses in construction cost estimating may be of particular interest to custom home builders because such programs also encompass general construction. These degree programs include construction or building science, construction management, civil engineering and construction engineering technology.
2. Gain work experience. Job applicants with hands on knowledge of construction products and materials, costs and building procedures have an edge over degree-only applicants. The more varied and knowledgeable the estimating background the better the applicant's chances of being hired. Look for work in heavy construction, residential and commercial construction, plumbing, masonry and electrical systems. Take jobs in both estimating, management and the construction trades for a well-rounded resume.
3. Acquire certification in construction estimating. The American Society of Professional Estimators is a nonprofit education and certification organization focused on the construction industry. Estimators who pass the ASPE certification exam are awarded certified professional estimator credentials. The certification process requires approval of the candidate's application by the ASPE and payment of fees, followed by completion of an online orientation workshop, two exams and a 2,500 word technical paper. Fees include the cost of the workshop and tests. Members of the ASPE pay $400 and non-members pay $650.
4. Make sure you have all the necessary skills. Custom home builders may have specific requirements for estimators. Review job wanted ads for estimators in the custom home building industry and see what additional skills you may need. For example, using cost reporting and monitoring systems requires computer skills and the use of construction management software programs. Many community colleges and continuing education programs offer courses in the use of construction software.
