A warm color will make a large room feel cozier.
One coat of paint is all it takes to give a room a new personality. It's an easy and low-cost way of making a big change. Since it can be difficult to make a large room feel cozy, use warm colors such as shades of brown, orange or yellow. Painting a large room can be time-consuming, but if done right, it will make a big impact.
Instructions
1. Buy enough paint to apply two or three coats as needed. Check the paint can for recommended spread rates per square feet.
2. Remove wall hangings, tables, lamps and curtains. Move heavy furniture to the center of the room and cover it with an old sheet or plastic sheeting.
3. Wipe down the walls with a wet cloth.
4. Fill holes and dents with spackle, using a putty knife. When dry, sand rough spots with sandpaper.
5. Unscrew and remove outlet and light switch covers.
6. Apply painter's tape where the wall meets the floor or baseboard trim, where the wall meets the ceiling or ceiling trim, and around windows and doors.
7. Lay a drop cloth or plastic sheeting on the the floor in front of the wall you will be painting.
8. Open the paint can with a paint key -- a small, metal tool used to pry off the lid -- or a screwdriver. Using the stir stick, mix the paint for several minutes until it is blended.
9. Pour a half-inch of paint into the paint tray.
10. Use a flat paint brush to trim the edges of each wall. Paint around the top and bottom of the wall, in the corners and around windows or doors. Angled brushes work well in corners.
11. Use a paint roller and roller sponge to paint the rest of each wall. Attach the roller extension to paint high places. Clean up drips and splatters immediately with a wet cloth.
12. Wait two to three hours before applying a second coat, or the amount of dry time listed on the paint can.
13. Repeat the process for the second coat of paint. Wait 12 to 24 hours to judge if a third coat is needed.
14. Wait 24 hours before removing painter's tape and replacing outlet and light switch covers.
