Test Having A Brush & Roll Versus Spray Fresh paint

Painting with a brush and roller is more time consuming.

Painting a house can be a time-consuming project. One of the advantages of painting with a paint sprayer is that it cuts the actual painting time down considerably; however, there are other things to keep in mind before taking the paint sprayer path. The set-up time involved in prepping a room takes much more time for a paint sprayer than the traditional brush and roller method. The cleanup time is also considerably more involved with a paint sprayer. The brush/roller system and the paint sprayer system both have advantages and disadvantages.

Instructions

1. Select one room in the house that you are painting to compare the brush/roller system with a spray painter. Paint one half of the room, walls, windows, and doors with a brush and roller and paint the second half of the room with a paint sprayer. Painting with a brush and roller requires first cutting in edges and seams with the brush and then rolling the flat surfaces with the roller. Applying the paint with a sprayer requires holding the tip of the sprayer 12 inches away from the surface and applying the paint in even and overlapping lines.

2. Compare the time it takes to paint the two different sides of the room. Paint sprayers are able to cover a large surface much more quickly than the time it takes to cover the same surface with a brush and roller. However, working with a spray painter requires extra time to protect the surrounding surfaces from over-spray. The windows, doors, and trim have to be covered and protected with plastic when painting the walls and the walls have to be covered and protected when painting the doors, windows and trim. On the other hand, painting with a brush and roller usually requires two coats for a finished appearance. Painting only one coat leaves brush marks that are clearly visible.

3. Compare the quality of the paint job on the two sides of the room. Pay attention to paint coverage on the walls, windows and doors. Pay particular attention to the seams and corners as well.

4. Compare the clean-up time involved after the painting is completed. Cleanup with a brush and roller only takes a few minutes. The brush can be easily cleaned outdoors with a garden hose or indoors in a utility sink with running water. The roller sleeve slips off of the roller. It can either be cleaned with water or disposed of. The paint on the roller can be scrubbed off with water and a rag. Cleaning the paint sprayer is more time consuming. Clean water has to be run through the sprayer and hose until all traces of the remaining paint are cleaned out. The sprayer and hose need to be wiped down to remove the paint over-spray that accumulates on them.

5. Compare the amount of paint it takes to paint the two different sides of the room. Paint sprayers usually require a considerable more amount of paint than a brush and roller requires to cover the same surface.
