Once a staple on any property, outhouses are now used more for decoration.
Outhouses, in some form or fashion, have been around ever since man decided he needed some privacy when doing his "business." Most of us now have indoor plumbing, and outhouses are more decorative than useful. But if your corner of the world still uses an outhouse on a regular basis, there are a few painting techniques you can employ to make your visit to the facility a more pleasant experience. The use of lime, or calcium hypochlorite, offers anti-bacterial properties similar to those of household bleach and will also deter insects and pests from taking up residence in your privy.
Instructions
1. Remove everything from the interior of the outhouse. Sweep and damp mop the interior.
2. Mix 1 tbsp. of lime into 1 gallon of water to make a "whitewash."
3. Paint the interior walls, ceiling, floor and seat of the outhouse with this whitewash.
4. Let dry and move accessories back inside.
5. Paint the exterior of the outhouse with a quality exterior paint in the color of your choice. Traditionally, the house was painted red with white trim, but today, you can go wild with color.
