Types & Colors Of Home Siding

Whether the house is grand or modest, sprawling or petite, home siding plays a large part in its look and feel. Because of this, siding is available in several materials and designs. While wood siding often takes advantage of its natural warmth and beauty, metal and vinyl siding display a range of colors.

Wood

Still a favorite choice for siding, wood is a traditional choice for homeowners and a subject of imitation by other siding choices such as vinyl. Both light and dark woods are used in siding including fir, pine and cedar. Each of these woods has a natural color ranging from yellow to dark brown, and darker woods such as cedar are often stained instead of painted, showing a warm and rich color. Still, most homes are painted, and wood exterior paints range in color from several shades of white and off-white to dark gray and brown. Blue, purple, yellow and red are also used to paint wood siding.

Metal

Although not as popular a choice as vinyl or wood, metal siding is durable, long lasting and offered in a variety of colors. Metal siding, such as aluminum, is resistant to rust and durable enough to sustain mild impacts while stainless steel is used in climates that experience hail. Colors of metal siding range from an impenetrable black to bright white, with tans, reds, grays, blues, greens and browns all available in between.

Stucco

Favored in Southwestern homes, large subdivisions and housing developments, Stucco is a cement and plaster mixture that is both light and strong. Like other types of cement, Stucco can be pigmented with a variety of colors to suit the taste of the homeowner. Although the most common stucco colors range from a light to medium tan, stucco can be painted or pigmented white, orange, gray, blue and terracotta.

Vinyl

Among the most frequently selected types of siding, vinyl offers durability and resistance to weathering. Additionally, unlike metal and wood, which must be painted to show a variety of colors, vinyl siding can be pigmented to match a range of colors and molded into a number of textures. Vinyl siding colors include shades of red, blue, green, yellow, white, gray, cream, orange and clay. Textures include wood grain, stone and brushed metal.
