Fresh paint A Boys Room

Paint a boy's room.

Painting a room isn't just about coating walls with color; it's also about giving the room personality and creating an atmosphere that will make the room's occupants feel at home. Painting a boy's room is no exception. Figuring out paint a boy's room takes planning, and the painting itself may take several days depending on the project's complexity. However, the finished room will reflect the amount of time and care you put into the project.

Instructions

Prep Work

1. Ask for input from the boy whose room you are painting. He may already have a color in mind. If you want to do something a little more elaborate than just covering the walls, work together to come up with a theme that reflects the boy's interest.

2. Choose the paint. When painting a boy's room, avoid selecting high-gloss paints that will show every scuff mark and handprint. Instead, choose a paint with an eggshell or matte finish.

3. Pull all furniture away from the walls, remove any artwork that's hanging up and cover the furniture and floors with canvas tarps. Tape down the edges of the tarp with painter's tape.

4. Remove switch plates and electrical outlet covers and tape over the outlets and switches with painter's tape.

5. Sand the walls (and the ceiling if you intent to paint it, too) with 120 grit sandpaper fitted to the end of a pole sander. Apply moderate pressure to the sander and pull it from the right the the left and back again. Work from the ceiling toward the floor. Scrape bumps off of any painted molding with a scraper and sand over the spots with damp sanding sponges to smooth them out.

6. Vacuum up all dust and debris with a wet/dry vacuum cleaner.

7. Apply caulk in any gaps between the molding and the wall; wet your finger and run it over the caulk to smooth it into place. Smooth out any imperfections in the wall, using a putty knife to apply either patch compound (plaster walls) or joint compound (drywall) to dents in the wall. Sand over the compound with 120 grit sandpaper to smooth it out.

Painting

8. Apply a 2 to 3-inch stripe of paint to the room's corners, including the points where the wall meets the ceiling and the molding, using a 2 1/2 brush loaded with paint only 1/3 of the way up the bristles. First, run a line of paint 1 inch out from the corners. Then position the brush so its bristles sit flush with the wall and apply gentle pressure until the longest bristles form a point. Use this point to apply a neat line of paint right against the corner or molded edge.

9. Cover the rest of the wall with a roller. Make sure you dampen the roller before you use it and fill a paint tray until paint just reaches the edge of the grate. Dip the roller into the pool of paint at the bottom of the tray and roll it back over the grate to completely cover the roller. Roll over the wall, making "M"s or "W"s.

10. Paint over the bare areas between the diagonally-oriented strokes with overlapping vertical strokes.

11. Paint any trim, using a wide brush with a straight edge to cover the center area of the trim and going over the edges with an angled sash brush, and let dry.
