A vinyl skirt around a mobile home conceals the base of the trailer and recreates the look of a traditional home. If the color of the skirting is not the color desired, a coat of paint can solve that problem. Painting vinyl skirting is different than painting many other surfaces. Just make sure the paint is compatible with the vinyl to avoid having it flake away within a few seasons.
Instructions
1. Select an exterior paint formulated for use with vinyl. Vinyl skirting expands and contracts constantly, requiring an elastic paint for coverage that binds with the vinyl while allowing the material to move. Choose a color that's no darker than the current color to avoid excessive heat absorption which can cause the skirting to buckle.
2. Clean the skirting with soap and water. Use a sponge and scrub brush to remove all dirt and debris. Remove any mildew present by scrubbing it with a 50-50 mix of oxygen bleach and water. Rinse off the soap and bleach with a water hose. Allow the skirting to dry for about two to three hours.
3. Place a strip of masking tape around the trailer at the edge of the skirting.
4. Apply the paint to the skirting using a paintbrush and paint roller. Use the paintbrush to apply a 3-inch strip of paint along the skirting edges, especially where the edge meets the trailer. Paint the rest of the skirting surface using a paint roller. Roll the paint on in overlapping rows with the overlaps between 1 and 2 inches. Allow the first coat to dry for two hours before applying a second coat. Allow the second coat to dry overnight before removing the masking tape.
