Remove Vinyl Siding

Most do-it-yourselfers can handle the task of removing vinyl siding.

Removing vinyl siding, whether to replace it all or just replace a portion, is a fairly easy home improvement project. In fact, the vinyl siding on a small house can be removed in just a couple of days with the right tools and a little understanding of the process. This makes vinyl siding a great choice, because a damaged portion can be easily removed and then replaced, making repairs affordable and convenient for the do-it-yourself homeowner.

Instructions

1. Identify the piece that you want to remove. Then locate the edge of the piece above the piece you will be removing.

2. Hook the zip tool into the locking edge of the piece of siding above the one you are removing. To do this, slide the tool under the edge of the piece of siding, then make the locking edge hook on to the siding. Pull down to keep the tool in place.

3. Try to find an edge or a spot that is loose on the siding if you cannot slide the zip tool in easily. If you cannot find a piece loose enough to allow you to hook the zip tool inside, move up one level. You can always replace the piece if you remove one that you do not actually need to remove.

4. Slide the zip tool along the locked piece of siding. This will release the lock between the two siding pieces.

5. Lift the unlocked piece of vinyl siding. This will expose the hem of the piece below, which is the one you actually want to remove.

6. Draw a line along the top of the piece of siding you are removing before removing it. This will help you to install the next piece in the correct location.

7. Pull out the nails by pushing the flat bar between the heads of the nails and the piece of vinyl siding. Once it is loose, slide the siding down to unlock it. Now you can remove it.
