Diy Do It Yourself Exterior Wall Insulation

Fiberglass insulation prevents air movement through the walls.

If your home remodeling project involves exposing any exterior walls in your home, take advantage of the situation to insulate (or re-insulate) the walls before you close them back up. Older homes often are poorly insulated, or not insulated at all, and you will be amazed at the difference it can make in your heating and cooling bills. Regular paper-backed insulation fits standard walls that have studs 16 inches apart. If your wall configuration is different than that, consult your home improvement store to figure out what kind of insulation you need.

Instructions

1. Measure the height of the wall studs.

2. Pull out length of fiberglass insulation from the roll and lay it out, paper side up. Measure to your length. Lay a carpenter's square over the surface of the insulation at that measurement. Cut it along the square, pressing down on the level to compress the insulation so you can cut through the paper and the fiberglass all at once.

3. Set the insulation strip into wall, between the first two studs, with the paper side facing you and the fiberglass side facing the wall.

4. Hold the extended edge of the paper on one side against the side of the stud, with the paper lined up with the top of the stud (but not sitting on its front-facing edge).

5. Secure the piece to the studs with staples every foot or 16 inches. Repeat the process for the other edge of the piece, along the other stud.

6. Do the same for the space between every two studs along the exterior wall. Use your razor knife to cut the insulation around any electrical boxes and other obstructions.
